THREE female members of the Edo State Police Command were stripped naked and beaten black and blue by an irate mob in the Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area in Benin metropolis after they went to an address to conduct an arrest. In what is a first of its kind, the trio, attached to the Oregbeni police division in Benin, were beaten so badly they had to be hospitalised.
They had gone to make an arrest in the area after being called to investigate a matter during which a landlady and her tenant were having a dispute.
Apparently, the police women were invited by a landlady in the area to arrest one of her tenants when a fracas ensued. Trouble started when the tenant insisted on taking her bath before going to the police station, a request said to have been declined by the police officers.
After that, the situation degenerated into an argument and in the ensuing fracas, other residents in the area joined the tenant to beat up the officers and thereafter stripped them naked. The landlady whose name was given as Mrs Okebuse, confirmed that she invited the police because she had given the tenants quit notice. She added: “When the police came to make arrest, they started fighting the police.
I ran for my live and hid at the other compound.”
One eyewitness said the landlady was in the habit of harassing and intimidating her tenants with the police. He confirmed that the latest fracas occurred when tenant insisted on taking her bath before going to the police station but the three officers refused to let her do so.
Edo State Police Commissioner Foluso Adebanjo, who also confirmed the incident, expressed disappointment over the attack, adding that the police would not take it lightly. He added that the attackers would be made to face the full wrath of the law and that suspects arrested have already been charged to court.
