A senior magistrate's court 2 in Lokojo, Kogi state, has denied Senator Dino Melaye bail - The chief magistrate, Suleiman Abdullahi, ruled that Melaye be remanded in police custody
- Melaye is being arraigned for an alleged criminal conspiracy, causing damage to government property, attempted suicide and escape from lawful custody The lawmaker representing Kogi West Senatorial district in the Senate, Dino Melaye, has been denied bail by a magistrate's court 2 in Lokojoa, Kogi state, in the case of an alleged criminal conspiracy, causing damage to government property, attempted suicide and escape from lawful custody.
The prosecution counsel, Alex Isihon, stated that the court did not have the jurisdiction to entertain the case, Channels reports. NAIJ.com notes that in his submission, Mike Ozekhome, counsel to Senator Melaye, argued that the court had the power by virtue of the constitution to try the case.
The chief magistrate, Suleiman Abdullahi, denied the bail application and ruled that Melaye would remain in custody for the next 37 days. Recall that Melaye who arrived Lokoja, Kogi state, was conveyed in an ambulance by the police authorities to appear before a magistrate's court 2 on Thursday, May 3. The senator was brought in a Toyota Hiace police ambulance bus with registration number NPF2214D.
It was learnt that some journalists who had laid siege to the courtroom were asked to step out for security screening.
